This tour can commence in: Reykjavik
Arrival in Reykjavik according to your own itinerary. Please note that airport transfer is not included but can be booked separately, see add-ons for more details. A nice way to start your holiday in Iceland is with a bath in the famous Blue Lagoon which can be included on the way from the airport to your hotel. Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is located 45 minutes from the airport. The Icelandic population consists of only 320.000 people and almost 60% of them live in the greater Reykjavik area. Even though Reykjavik is not a big city compared to other capitals of the world, it has everything a cosmopolitan city should offer; great dining, unique boutiques, shops, museums, theaters and a vibrant nightlife. Accommodation at Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura (or similar). The hotel is located close to the city center in a quiet area near the sea.
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet the group and your driver-guide who will brief you on today's trip. For the coming three days, you will travel by super jeep. A super jeep is originally a standard truck/SUV or van that is modified according to strict regulations in Iceland. It is basically an especially equipped 4x4 vehicle with very large tires that is designed appositely to face Icelandic demanding terrains and unpredictable weather both in winter and summer.
You start by driving through Reykjavík town centre to give you an introduction to the country and its people. Leaving the city, it won’t take long to reach a remote area, and the first stop is to try some simple caving in an ancient lava tube. From there, you will visit the farm Gaulverjabaer to experience how people live in Iceland’s countryside.
Once you reach Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano that caused air chaos in 2010, you head north for a 4x4 adventure in the Thorsmork Nature Reserve and enjoy a picnic lunch featuring local specialities. Afterwards, you will visit Gljufrabui, a waterfall that is only accessible to small groups, before continuing to Skogarfoss waterfall where you take a quick stop to visit a traditional turf house. Back aboard your 4x4 jeeps you will drive along the south coast’s famous black sand beaches. You will spend the evening at the Hrifunes Guesthouse, a cozy home in the countryside, far away from any light pollution, giving you a good chance of glimpsing the elusive Northern Lights.
After a hearty, home-made breakfast, you start the day journeying along the mountain road that crosses Eldhraun, a huge lava field from an eruption in the 18th century. You will pass the huge cliffs at Lomagnupur and incredible basalt columns. Then at Skaftafell National Park, it is time to put on crampons and take an ice pick for a walk on Svinafellsjokull glacier. You will enjoy another picnic lunch before continuing to the famous Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon with its colourful icebergs and seals. Dinner and accommodation at Hrifunes Guesthouse. After dinner, you have another chance to see Northern Lights.
Breakfast at the guesthouse. Board your super jeep again for an adventure in the snow. As the Super Jeep can access remote locations in winter, your guide will choose the most exiting option, leaving you in awe of the Icelandic nature and pure air on your way back along the South Coast. After the picnic lunch, we recommend a bath in the naturally warm lake of the Secret Lagoon, an experience very popular with the locals. You will end the day by visiting the three pearls of Iceland’s Golden Circle tour: the big waterfall Gullfoss, the spouting hot spring Geysir and the national park and UNESCO site Thingvellir, site of Iceland’s first parliament and a place where two tectonic plates are slowly but steadily separating. For your farewell gathering, you are invited to taste the local schnapps, brennivin, and a bit of fermented shark meat to go with it.
Return to Reykjavik where the evening is at your leisure. Accommodation at Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura (or similar).
