Visit to Coal Mine No. 3

Join in on an exciting and authentic 3-hour guided tour into Svalbard's coal mine number 3. Put on a yellow helmet and experience the life of a coal miner. This is a different experience taking you deep inside the mountain.

Are you curious about the coal mining industry in Longyearbyen and the history behind it?

Mine 3 was in use between 1971 and 1996, and the working height was no more than 60-90cm. When production was stopped, all the machinery and equipment was left behind – none of it could be used in the newer mines. You enter the main tunnels of the mine and walk 250 meters in. You will then continue into one of the side tunnels where the first seed bank on Svalbard is located.

During the tour, you will get the opportunity to crawl through a narrow tunnel where you can get a feeling of the working conditions of the last low-drifted mine in Longyearbyen.
