Arrival in Bergen according to your own itinerary. Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and the world’s only city surrounded by 7 mountains and 7 fjords. Bergen is with good reason called the Gateway to the Fjords due to its close proximity to the Norwegian fjords. This makes the city the perfect starting point for excursion and activities in the fjord region. Accommodation in Bergen.
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning is at your own leisure in Bergen. Sights of interest include the Hanseatic Bryggen Harbour, Fløibanen Funicular, Troldhaugen, the Fish and Flower market, Bergen Aquarium and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum). If time we also recommend a hike in the mountains surrounding Bergen. A popular hike among the locals is the mountain hike between Ulriken and Fløyen. Departure by train to Voss in the afternoon. As an alternative you can catch an earlier train to Voss and experience white water rafting (please see add-ons for further details). Accommodation in Voss, home town of the annual extreme sports week.
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning departure from Voss by train to Myrdal, where you will change to the Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway passes through wild and beautiful mountain scenery with waterfalls and steep mountain sides reaching a height of up to 900 metres and down to the Sognefjord. At Berekvam station, half way down the Flåm Railway, you will leave the train, meet your guide and continue the remaining 11 kilometres to Flåm by bike. The downhill bike ride follows a gravel road along the river with spectacular view of the waterfalls, mountain sides and valley. If you like you can even fill your water bottle from the river and streams along the way. In the fjord village of Flåm you will have some time at leisure before you will go on a thrilling Fjord Safari along the narrow Nærøyfjord, which was added to UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites in 2005. Your guide will give you an exciting ride with the RIB boat, speeding close to sheer mountain walls and jumping waves and wake from fjord ferries. You will also experience the tranquility of an area hard to reach and seldom visited and learn about the history and geography of this amazing place. If you are lucky you might even see some seals. After 1 ½ hour you will arrive in Gudvangen, at the head of the Nærøyfjord. If you like, you can add a 4-hour kayaking tour on the fjord, please see add-ons for more information. A bus will be waiting for you to take you up the hairpin bends of the Stalheimskleiva Road, one of Europe’s steepest roads. At approximately 2 pm (6:30pm if you go kayaking) you will arrive back in Voss and can collect your luggage at the hotel before catching the afternoon (evening) train back to Bergen. Please note that if you would like to include white water rafting you can also do this today (unless you chose to include kayaking). You will then return to Bergen by train in the evening.
