Arrival in Alta according to your own itinerary. Alta is the largest town in Finnmark, Norway’s most northern county and the home of the indigenous Sami people. The most famous attraction in Alta are the rock carvings at Alta Museum, dating 2,000 to 6,200 years back. The rock carvings were included on UNESCO’ list of world heritage site in 1985. Accommodation in Alta.
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will leave Alta taking the Road of the Midnight Sun across the remote Sennalandet Plateau. The arctic scenery is spectacular, and if travelling in the early summer the snow along the road makes this a breathtaking drive. At Kåfjord an underwater tunnel will bring you to the Magerøya Island and Honningsvåg, where you will spend the night. In the evening we recommend driving to the North Cape Plateau where you can admire the panoramic view of the open wide expanse of the Arctic Ocean, and perhaps have the opportunity to see the Midnight Sun (if the sky is clear). Entrance to the North Cape Hall is included. Here you will find a viewing platform, souvenir shops, cinema, cafeteria and restaurant. Return to Honningsvåg at your own leisure. Make sure to look out for reindeer during the drive; Magerøya Island is the summer pasture for reindeer and you will most likely see reindeer running free along the road. Accommodation in Honningsvåg.
Breakfast at the hotel. The first half of the day will be at your own leisure to explore Magerøya Island, with its fishing villages and great hiking possibilities. In Honningsvåg you will also find the Arctico Ice Bar where you will experience the magic of the winter, the ice and snow indoors. Also recommended is a bird safari by boat to Gjesværstappen Nature Reserve, where you will see birds like puffins, gannets and perhaps even sea eagles. Around 3 pm you will embark on a 7-hour cruise with Hurtigruten along the arctic coast of Norway to Berlevåg. From here a short drive under the midnight sun will take you to the tiny village of Kongsfjord, a hidden gem in the Arctic, where you will be staying at cozy refurbished houses in a traditional fishing village. Kongsfjord Guest House used to be a farmhouse and a fishermen’s quarter dating back to the end of the 18th century (see hotel description for further details). Accommodation in Kongsfjord
The friendly owners Åse and her husband Trygg will serve you a delicious homemade breakfast in their traditional Norwegian home. Spend the morning learning about the history of Kongsfjord, before exploring the area on your own. We recommend going for a walk out to the edge of Veines peninsula, during which you can explore the wild and beautiful landscape of arctic beaches, troll-shaped cliffs, and wild ocean. At lunch time your hosts will serve you a traditional home cooked meal made of fresh local ingredients. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the tranquility of this remote location along the arctic coast. After dinner we recommend a stroll under the midnight sun.
Lunch, dinner & accommodation in Kongsfjord.
Enjoy a delicious breakfast before saying goodbye to your hosts at Kongsfjord Guest House. Today you will drive across the mountain to Tana Bru, with impressive views to Kongsfjord Mountain. Continue along the Norwegian/Finnish border to Karasjok, the Capital of the Sami People. Here you will find the Sami parliament and Sapmi (“the land of the Sami”), a Cultural Center where you can learn about the Sami culture and history in an informative and entertaining way.
Accommodation in Karasjok.
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive across the remote Finnmarksvidda Mountain Plateau to Kautokeino, Norway’s largest municipality where the majority of the population is Sami. We recommend a visit at Juhls Silver Gallery, before continuing in northern direction to Alta. Before reaching Alta we recommend a visit at Boazo Sami Siida, located on the shores of the Alta River. Here you will get a glimpse into the life and history of the indigenous Sami people. Accommodation in Alta.
