This tour can commence in: Tromsø
Arrival in Tromsø according to your own itinerary. The arctic city of Tromsø is the world’s most northern university town and the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle. The city lies between the sharp craggy peaks of the Lyngen Alps, and combines wild scenery with urban life. Tromsø will be your base for the next few days - offering plenty of opportunities for exotic winter activities and Northern Lights excursions. Accommodation in Tromsø
Breakfast at the hotel before you will be picked up in the city centre and transferred to a base camp located north on Kvaløya (the Whale Island). During the drive you can enjoy the beautiful scenery while the guide tell you about the adventure that awaits you. You will also learn about the coastal culture of fishing and farming. After arriving to base camp, you will be provided with an extra layer of clothing and survival suits, before heading off on board the RIB boat (Rigid Inflatable Boat). The boat trip passes by breathtaking fjord scenery while keeping a lookout for white tailed eagles, other sea birds and seals. If you are very lucky you might even spot some whales. Previous years humpback whales and orcas have occasionally been seen from November to January, however since it is not possible to predict the migrational pattern of the whales, as they follow the herring, the great flocks from previous years may not be back in the fjords surrounding Tromsø at your time of visit. On the small island of Gåsvær you will go ashore and visit its traditional church, before enjoying some hot coffee or tea on the church steps while the guide tells about the culture and history of the area. In Tromsø you will have five hours at leisure before joining an excursion by bus to hunt for the magical Northern lights (small group tour). With good local knowledge the guide will find the best area for the lights and good scenery for your pictures. The hunt will go wherever needed to find clear sky. During the evening your guide will provide interesting information about the Northern lights, both the science and the folklore. The guide will also show you how to adjust your camera settings for pictures of the northern lights, and will take pictures of you with the lights for you to take home to show your family and friends. For some extra fun in the snow they will also bring their “butt boards” (type of small toboggan), just in case you find some nice hills to sleigh down! Depending on the evening’s route you might also visit the lavvo at Tromsø Friluftsenter’s basecamp and sit around the nice warm bonfire, and roast marshmallows. Accommodation in Tromsø.
Breakfast at the hotel. This day is at your own leisure to explore Tromsø further. Sights of interest include the Arctic Cathedral, Polaria, the Polar Museum, Tromsø Gondola Lift, the Northern Light Planetarium and more. You also have the option to join winter activities like dog sledding, snowmobile safari, reindeer sledding or ice fishing (not included in the tour price). Please be aware that dog sledding is possible from November 1, but at the beginning of the season the snow-conditions are more stable in Lyngsfjord than closer to Tromsø. Dog sledding in Lyngsfjord is available from November 15, while snowmobile safaris are available from December 1. In the evening we recommend having dinner at one of Tromsø’s excellent restaurants.
