Experience two of Norway's spectacular fjords; the Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. Drive on scenic tourist roads along the fjords and across breathtaking mountain passes and stay at charming historical hotels of Norway. Activities like kayaking and glacier walk can be added.
This tour can commence in: Bergen
Arrival in Bergen according to your own itinerary. Your hotel for the next two nights is the historic Solstrand Hotel, situated right by the fjord only 30 km south of Bergen and the airport. The hotel has been in the Schau-Larsen family for four generations, preserving a tradition of unsurpassed hospitality, traditional cuisine and a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
Dinner and accommodation at Solstrand Hotel (room with fjord view).
Breakfast at the hotel. This day is at your own leisure. We recommend an excursion to Bergen, Norway’s second largest city and the world’s only city surrounded by 7 mountains and 7 fjords. Attractions in Bergen include the Hanseatic Bryggen Harbour, Fløibanen Funicular, Troldhaugen, the Fish and Flower market, Bergen Aquarium and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum). Accommodation at Solstrand Hotel (room with fjord view).
Breakfast at the hotel. Two ferry crossings (to be paid on spot) will bring you across the Bjørnefjord and the Hardangerfjord to Jondal, while you will have the possibility to see Norway’s 3rd largest glacier, Folgefonna. Continue on the scenic road via Utne and along Sørfjorden, an arm of the Hardangerfjord, to Lofthus. Along the way we recommend a visit at Agatunet and Tyssedal Power Plant.; Agatunet is one of the few remaining farm communities which provides unique examples of western Norwegian building traditions from the Middle Ages until the present day. In addition to the farm buildings the museum offers handicraft shops, art exhibitions, a workshop for weavers, baking of traditional food and much more. Your hotel for the next night is the impressive Ullensvang Hotel, beautifully located in Lofthus on the Hardangerfjord. The Hardangerfjord is the second largest fjord in Norway, and famous for its fruit orchards. The contrast created by green hillsides, orchards in blossom and snow-clad mountains has inspired many, and among them the well-known Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg with his famous composition «Spring». If travelling in May you will have the possibility to see the lovely blossoming of the fruit trees. Dinner and accommodation at Ullensvang Hotel (room with fjord view).
Breakfast at the hotel. Leave Lofthus by car along the Hardangerfjord to Eidfjord, where we recommend a visit at the Hardangervidda Nature Centre. In Eidfjord you can also join a kayaking or rafting excursion. Ascend the scenic Måbødal Valley where at the top we highly recommend a stop to see the spectacular Vøringsfossen Waterfall, with a fall of 182 metres. Continue across Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau, with its snow-capped mountain peaks to the mountain village of Geilo.
Dinner and accommodation at Dr.Holms Hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will drive from Geilo via Hol and towards the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord. The first glimpse of the fjord when arriving from the mountain road is breathtaking. Hairpin bends will lead you down to the fjord and the villages of Aurland and Flåm. In Flåm we recommend a stop to experience a roundtrip with the Flåm Railway, which passes through wild and beautiful mountain scenery with waterfalls and steep mountain sides from the Sognefjord and reaching up to a height of 900 metres. There is no other adhesion railway in the world running on normal tracks that is so steep over a long distance. Drive from Flåm in direction of Voss and continue across the Vika Mountain to Vangsnes, for a short ferry crossing (to be paid on spot) to the beautiful fjord village of Balestrand. Dinner and accommodation at Kvikne’s Hotel (room with fjord view).
Breakfast at the hotel. This day is at your own leisure in Balestrand. As an alternative we recommend an excursion to Fjærland and the Glacier Museum (possible from June to August). Travel on the Fjærlandsfjord and experience one of the most beautiful fjord arms in Norway. Along the fjord, the old hamlets and farms are reminders of the struggle for existence in past times. Local busses will transport you to the Glacier Museum, where you will learn more about the glaciers and how the fjords were formed. From there you will continue to two different extensions of the Jostedal Glacier; Supphellebreen and Bøyabreen glaciers (not possible to walk on the glaciers). Return by ferry to Balestrand (please see add-ons for further details). Dinner and accommodation at Kvikne’s Hotel (room with fjord view).
Breakfast at the hotel. Depart Balestrand in western direction via Høyanger to Lavik, where a short ferry crossing (to be paid on spot) will bring you across the Sognefjord to Oppedal. Continue to Bergen. Accommodation in Bergen.
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Bergen according to your own itinerary.
