Fjord & Glacier Excursion
Experience the natural wonders of Norway; the fjords and the glaciers. The Fjærlandsfjord and the Jostedalsbreen Glacier are the highlights on this excursion.
Itinerary: Travel by boat along the dramatic western coastline before cruising along the Sognefjord, the world’s longest and deepest fjord, to Balestrand. Continue along the Fjærlandsfjord on board the M/F ”Fjærlandsfjord” and experience one of the most beautiful fjord arms in Norway. Steep forest-clad mountainsides surround the narrow Fjærlandsfjord, which takes you in to the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Along the fjord, the old hamlets and farms are reminders of the struggle for existence in former times.
The village of Fjærland is at the innermost point of the fjord. From here you will continue by bus to the Norwegian Glacier Museum where you can learn more about glaciers; the aim of the Norwegian Glacier Museum is to collect, create and communicate knowledge about snow, ice and glaciers. What is a glacier? How were the fjords formed? The museum has the answer to these and many other questions. With the help of advanced film techniques, interactive models and your own experiments with ice, you can experience the interaction of natural forces.
From the museum continue by bus to the Supphellebreen and Bøyabreen glaciers, both of which are part of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Please note that it is not possible to walk on the glaciers during this excursion.
Return to Bergen by boat.
Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell
The Hardangerfjord is the second largest fjord in Norway, and famous for it’s fruit orchards. The contrast created by green hillsides, orchards in blossom and snow-clad mountains has inspired many, and among them the well known Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg with his famous composition «Spring». If travelling in May you will have the possibility to see the lovely blossoming of the fruit trees.
Itinerary: Travel by train to Voss and continue by bus through attractive farmland to the village of Ulvik, beautifully located by the Hardangerfjord. From Ulvik you will embark on a cruise across the Hardangerfjord to Eidfjord, where you will have 3 hours at leisure. You can relax by the fjord or look around in the centre of Eidfjord. Also recommendable is an optional sightseeing tour to Hardangervidda Nature Centre and the spectacular Vøringsfossen Waterfall, Norway’s highest waterfall.
The tour continues in the afternoon with a 2,5 hour cruise on the Hardangerfjord to Norheimsund. The last part of the excursion goes by bus to Bergen, passing the impressive Steindalsfossen waterfall.Sognefjord in a Nutshell
