Perhaps you would even like to add a stop at the Blue Lagoon for a relaxing bath on the way from/to the airport. If you arrive early you can also use the day to explore the city. Reykjavik has a lot to offer including great dining, unique boutiques, shops, museums, theaters, a number of swimming pools and a vibrant nightlife. Accommodation in Reykjavik at Icelandairhotel Reykjavik Natura (or similar). The hotel is located close by the city center (20 min walk) but is still in one of the greenest areas in Reykjavik. Dinner is not included in the program this evening, but there is an excellent restaurant at the hotel and Reykjavik offers many quality restaurants to choose from.

Day 02: Westman Islands, Pompeii of the North

Breakfast at the hotel. You will meet with your English speaking tour escort at 8:45 hrs at your hotel. The tour departs from Reykjavík to the south to Landeyjarhöfn harbour. When you arrive at the pier a 30 minute ferry crossing will bring you over to the Westman Islands (roundtrip with the ferry is included). The Westman Islands are one of the best kept secrets in Iceland and some say you haven't seen Iceland until you have visited these islands. Once there your guide will show you around Heimaey Island, the largest of the Westman Islands. Adventures of the day include a visit to the puffins in Storhofdi, a walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only a few years ago and exploring flora of the new lava field. After lunch you will have time at leisure to explore the islands on your own. The entrance to the Eldheimar Volcanic Centre is included. The guide will be happy to help with booking an optional RIB boat tour if you are interested in that. Dinner tonight is not included. Accommodation at Hotel Vestmannaeyjar on the Westman Islands.

Day 03: South Shore, waterfalls and Eyjafjallajökull visitors centre

Breakfast at the hotel. Take the ferry back to the mainland and travel further along the south shore, passing many glacial rivers. The first stop will be at Þorvaldseyri Farm which is located at the foot of the world famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which last erupted in the spring of 2010. A visitors center/family run exhibit was opened there in the spring of 2011 with interesting facts about the eruption and a 20-minute film about this spectacular natural event. Entrance to the visitor center is included. Your next stop is at Skogarfoss Waterfall where water drops down 60 meters. Only a few steps from the waterfall is Skogar folk museum where you can learn more about the Icelandic culture. Entrance to the Skogar museum in included. The tour then continues to Reynisfjara, a beach of black volcanic rock and columns. The tour will continue to Iceland’s most southern village, Vik. Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Edda Vik (or a similar hotel in the area), offering views to the Atlantic Ocean and the Vik mountains. Here you will stay for 2 nights.

Day 04: Skaftafell National Park and Jökulsarlon Glacial Lagoon

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will head for a day tour from the hotel, and return again in the afternoon. You will travel through the Catholic convent at Kirkjubæjarklaustur towards Skaftafell National Park, one of Iceland’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty. The area is dominated by magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. You will go for a short hiking tour with the guide in the Skaftafell area; depending on the weather the walk will either take you to the waterfall Svartifoss or the glacier Skaftafellsjokull. Another stop this day is at the small turf chapel by Núpsstaður. The tour then continues to the famous Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs float and grind together in the still, deep waters of the lagoon. Here you will go on a boat tour among the icebergs. Return to Hotel Edda Vik (or similar) for dinner and accommodation.

Day 05: Geysir hot spring area, Thingvellir national park and Reykjavík

Breakfast at the hotel. This morning you will depart for the so-called Golden Circle area. You first head for the Geysir hot spring area to see the famous Geysir and Strokkur geysers. Strokkur is a hot spring that spouts water up to 40 meters height in the air every few minutes. From there you travel to Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls. Your next stop is at Reykholt village, one of Iceland's major historic sites, where the guide will take you for walk. From there the tour continues to Þingvellir National Park, where the ancient parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. The Þingvellir area is part of a fissure zone running through Iceland. It is where the continental drift between the Eurasian plate and the North American plate takes place. Every year the continentals drift approx. 2 cm. From Þingvellir you head back to Reykjavik. Accommodation in Reykjavík at Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura (or similar). Dinner is not included in the program this evening, but there is an excellent restaurant at the hotel and Reykjavik offers many quality restaurants to choose from.
