June 17: Join us for a fjord experience out of the ordinary; visit remote places most tourists never get to see; travel in a small group on an exclusive fjord cruise; experience the Norwegian fjord culture & traditions; spend a day at leisure in a fjord hamlet off the beaten track; ascend the Flåm Railway.
The selected tour can commence in Bergen.
Arrival in Bergen according to your own itinerary. Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and the world’s only city surrounded by 7 mountains and 7 fjords. Bergen is, with good reason, called the Gateway to the Fjords. The city is located on the west coast of Norway with close proximity to the famous Norwegian fjords. Sights of interest include the Hanseatic Bryggen Harbour, Fløibanen Funicular, Edvard Grieg's home Troldhaugen, the Fish and Flower market, Bergen Aquarium and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum). Accommodation in Bergen.
Breakfast at the hotel before you at 9 am will meet your group and depart for your fjord cruise with MS Tollesund. In a group of maximum 18 persons you will be taken good care of by your guide and your captain for the next 3 days. During this highly personal cruise you will explore and experiencing the coast, the ocean, the fjords and the ever changing landscape from the comfort of a small ship. Stops are made along the way for lunch and special sights, including a visit at the small island of Utvær. The island is in fact Norway's westernmost point and it is situated where the fjord meets the Norwegian Sea. Your guide will take you on a walking tour of the island as well as into the old lighthouse, before a delicious homemade lunch will be served. The menu of the day is white and red fish netted the same morning, as well as other local specialties. After lunch you will sail into the Sognefjord, the world’s deepest and longest fjord, before heading into the narrow and breathtaking Finnafjord. At the head of this amazing fjord arm you will find the small farm settlement of Findebotten – only accessible by boat. No roads, no traffic, no television… And here, at this wild and wonderfully tranquil settlement, is where you will spend the next two nights (see hotel descriptions for further details). You and your group will have the place to yourselves. Dinner and accommodation at Findebotten Guesthouse.
Wake up to the serenade of beautiful bird songs, before enjoying a homemade Norwegian breakfast. This day will be at your own leisure to explore Findebotten Farm and the Finnafjord. Take in the stunning natural landscape around the farm, relax and listen to what can best be described as deafening silence, go fishing or even kayaking or canoeing. You also have the possibility to join a guided hike exploring the natural fjord landscape. Before or after dinner you may want to just sit outside with a glass of wine enjoying the magnificent view. Lunch, dinner and accommodation at Findebotten Guesthouse.
After a hearty breakfast your fjord adventure continues. Today you will sail into the Fjærlandsfjord, where a visit at the Jostedal Glacier is included. The Jostedal glacier is the largest glacier in continental Europe, and as you approach you will see the white icecap glimmering in the distance. You will anchor in the small village of Fjærland, where you can still find one of the few remaining original Norwegian tourist hotels, built in the early 1890’s to cater for the influx of English tourists, lords and the like. In this historic building all is set for lunch. Fjærland is curiously enough also a so-called book town, with a collection of some 250 000 volumes! After lunch a bus will bring you closer to one of the glacial arms of the Jostedal glacier, hovering above you on the steep mountainside (please note that you will not be able to walk on the glacier, nor drive all the way up to the glacier). Late afternoon you will cruise out the fjord again, aiming for the nearby village of Balestrand where you will say goodbye to your group. Dinner included for Hotel Category 1 only. Accommodation in Balestrand (fjord view).
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning at leisure before departure by express boat for a 1 1/2-hour cruise to Flåm, Norway’s only fjord village with train connection. In Flåm you will have a couple of hours at leisure before boarding the Flåm Railway which passes through wild and beautiful mountain scenery with waterfalls and steep mountain sides reaching a height of up to 900 metres. There is no other adhesion railway in the world running on normal tracks that is so steep over a long distance. From Myrdal you will return to Bergen by train. Accommodation in Bergen.
